We set ourselves a challenge in 2013, after the G20 conference to make music therapy accessible to the 870,000 suffers of dementia, Alzheimer’s in Britain. Research has proven that with the intervention of music in the lives of those suffering with this debilitating disease the symptoms can be delayed for up to 5 years. Music lights up the brain reigniting forgotten memories and provides a better quality of life and enjoyment to those suffering with the disease.
If you’re one of the millions of people globally who’ve recently been diagnosed with a life-changing condition such as Aphasia, Dementia or Alzheimer’s, or you know someone who has, it’s hard to find tools and techniques that can have a positive impact on how you communicate, think and feel. Even finding ways of changing your situation for the better, even as prevention or cure can seem daunting. That’s why we invented SAM.
Greg Woods, is the Director of Music and Therapy at Universal Therapies ltd and trained at the Royal Military School of Music in 1976.
In 2008 he started to use his musical skills as a therapist, and quickly found that his music could unlock memories for people with dementia.
It soon became apparent that his techniques could also help people with aphasia. Greg believes that until a cure for dementia is found, we all must do what we can to ease the burden placed on care givers, and of course, people with dementia.
SAM® the Sing Along Machine
SAM® the Sing Along Machine was developed by Greg a Director of Universal Therapies, he has worked in Residential care homes for many years delivering music based therapy. He developed SAM® to help him deliver stimulating cognitive therapy sessions, when he realised that his invention SAM® actually worked, he quickly sought help to bring his idea to life.
A team was put together at the end of 2013 to develop SAM® the team is made up of Greg Woods the Musical director, Richard Woods Sales & Marketing Director and Lloyd Harris Operations Director.
SAM® is a musical brain gym, for you to work out in as little or as often as you like.

Make Your Own Film
Our Thanks to Chris for his help, Chris volunteered to make this film when he heard about our work with dementia.
Music is a great help to people with dementia and their caregivers. SAM was designed as a means to delay the onset of dementia, and to improve the quality of life for people with dementia, it is also a great tool for caregivers, and can bring great comfort. in addition SAM can be used as an assessment tool, and helps to alleviate boredom and anxiety. Chris stood before the camera having never before playing SAM and with no rehearsal. this is very brave for a professional musician. So Once more, Thank You Chris.
If you are a budding star, perhaps you might want to film yourself using SAM?
BBC Spotlight Program
SAM has been featured on the BBC Spotlight program. SAM could delay the onset of dementia (Dr Doris Bersing) and can improve the quality of life for people with dementia. Sadly the BBC were not allowed to promote the app, So if you want to learn more please click on tutorials.
